Mukesh Ambani becomes a trillionaire


surge in share prices of his group companies has earned Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani a rare distinction of being the only trillionaire in the country with over Rs 1,00,000 crore of wealth through his shareholdings. Younger brother Anil is also trailing behind closely with close to Rs 90,000 crore of wealth in the stock market through his holdings in various group companies. The combined market capitalisation of the four Mukesh Ambani Group companies – RIL, Reliance Petroleum (RPL), IPCL and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure Ltd (RIIL) – has crossed the Rs 2,50,000 crore mark.
The total promoter holding in these companies is worth over half at about Rs 1,30,000 crore. The total investors' wealth in the four Anil Ambani Group firms – Reliance Communications (RCOM), Reliance Capital (RCL), Reliance Energy (REL) and Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL) has reached 1,42,384 crore, while total promoter holding is estimated at about Rs 87,000 crore.

While Anil Ambani holds control of most of these shareholdings, his stakes in some other listed companies such as Adlabs Films takes his total wealth in capital market to around Rs 90,000 crore. Mukesh Ambani, based on his direct and indirect holdings in various group companies, is estimated to have control of about Rs 1,11,000 crore worth shares.

The wealth of the two Ambanis include value of shares held in their names, as well as those held in the names of their children, wives and various holding companies. While RIL has witnessed a jump of about Rs 1,08,000 crore in its market value in the past one year, RCOM has gained by about Rs 70,500 crore in the same period.

Reliance Capital has also gained about Rs 14,000 crore in one year, while the gain for RPL is around Rs 12,250 crore. RNRL and REL have gained close to Rs 1,500 crore each, while IPCL has added close to Rs 4,500 crore to its market cap in the past 12 months, although that of RIIL has dropped by about Rs 300 crore.

According to the data available with stock exchanges, Mukesh's direct and indirect holding in RIL is estimated at around 46 per cent or close to Rs 1,10,000 crore, while his holdings in other group firms total to about Rs 1,000 crore.

Anil's wealth comes mostly from his over 65 per cent stake in RCOM, which has a market cap of about Rs 1,03,000 crore. He also has over 50 per cent in RCL (market cap of Rs 24,000 crore), 35 per cent in REL (market cap of Rs 12,700 crore) and close to 54 per cent in RNRL, which has a market cap of about Rs 2,600 crore.

RIL, which has a market cap of Rs 2,40,624 crore currently, has 50.95 per cent of total promoter holding worth about Rs 1,22,600 crore. Besides, promoters hold 38.21 per cent or Rs 2,500 crore in RPL (market cap of Rs 6,632 crore), Rs 2,690 crore in IPCL (47.35 per cent of Rs 5,682 crore) and about Rs 180 crore in RIIL (46.23 per cent of Rs 387 crore).

Among Anil Ambani Group firms, promoters hold shares worth about Rs 69,000 crore (66.74 per cent) in RCOM, Rs 12,500 crore in RCL (52.15 per cent), 4,374 crore in REL (34.44 per cent) and Rs 1,290 crore in RNRL (Rs 49.93 crore).
